News

Four months ago, terror held the world in stand still. The attacks on both Saffron and Castelia have concluded... and despite the growing darkness, the people of the world band together to throw an event in the spirit of world unity and the courage to stand against this new foe.

Ho ho ho! Who's excited for the days of snow?
I ceterianly am, that I sure know!

Well, to get you guys'n'galls all warmed up with that feeling of cheer,
we're going to be holding a ton of contests this year!

Scroll down to take a gander...
at all the contests I'm sure you won't slander!

Whether you enter one or none,
entries by the 30th should be done!

If there are any questions, ask them here.
I never bite, so have no fear!

BASIC RULES
1. Take these things seriously. If I find you're just messing with them to screw up other people's fun, you'll be disqualified from every contest for the next three months.
2. You are allowed to enter all of the contests.
3. Be polite and ask all questions here. Do not PM me with questions, because they may solve stuff for other members in this case.
4. Please post all of your entries (be they haiku, phrases, or other) in one post, preferably the first post you make in this thread. It's easier for the judges that way.

FOOD HAIKU
The object of this contest is to write a haiku. Haiku are a type of poem, you may be familiar with them, which is simple and short. They're composed of, traditionally, three lines with alternating amounts of syllables. The first line is five syllables, the second line is seven, and the third and final line is again five syllables. There are variations of this, and Wikipedia notes them, but for this contest's sake, 5-7-5 is the best way to go.

Now that we've got the introductory out of the way, onto the theme. Generally, haiku are nature or seasonal. This time around, the theme is food, or you can do something holiday food related. Entries are graded based on coherency to this theme. It does not have to involve Pokémon unless you want it to and lack there of Pokémon will not penalize you.

Rules:
1. You may enter up to three haiku, but only your best will win you a prize and you will only win one prize, not all three.
2. If you enter one haiku at first, then make another one, edit your first post.
3. If you want to edit your haiku, edit it in your post, do not re-post it.

Prizes:
Soda the Slowpoke, Tangerine the Joltik, Mellowmint the Cottonee.
The 1st place winner gets first pick, the 2nd place winner receives the second pick and the 3rd place winner receives the third Pokémon. If there are a lot of entries, the prize pool may be expanded.

ONE SHOT
A one shot is the typical name for a fan fiction that stands alone; basically, it starts, happens and finishes all in a single "chapter." Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to write a one shot for this contest. The theme is "You are exploring the abode of days long past, sent there for some task. A dread chill descends upon the relic remains of the dwelling and mist rises from the floor in lazy coils. A voice whispers through the air: "I must rest... I must rest..."" You are allowed to use any canon or original Pokémon character you want, it's completely up to you and you do not have to be their RPer. (It goes without saying that our short stories should have content that abides InvisionFree's rules concerning mature content.)

I really hate putting word limits on things, also, but to avoid having horribly short one-shots, I'm going to set the bar at 1,000 words minimum roughly. If you feel you can achieve a good story in less, you are welcome to try, but I would really prefer something more fleshed out plot wise than that, if it's going to be bare bones at less than 1,000.

Rules:
1. You may enter two one shots, but only your best will win you a prize and you will only win one prize, not all of them.
2. If you want to go back and make changes, you are more than welcome up until the 30th, but please, edit your first post.

Prizes:
Shadows the Cubone and Dusk the Vulpix.
The 1st place winner gets first pick, the 2nd place winner receives the second Pokémon. If there are a lot of entries, the prize pool may be expanded.

CAROLS
Take any carol out there and put it into Pokémon terms! Entries will actually be graded on how well the new terms keep the pace of the original song. If you want to make it a "funny carol" (along the lines of the Batman Jingle Bells rendition) you are more than welcome. Best of luck!

Rules:
1. You may enter up to three carols, but only your best will win you a prize and you will only win one prize, not all of them.
2. If you enter one carol at first, then make another one, edit your first post.
3. If you want to edit your carols, edit it in your post, do not re-post it.

Prizes:
Crush the Tirtouga and Crash the Scraggy.
The 1st place winner gets first pick, the 2nd place winner receives the second Pokémon. If there are a lot of entries, the prize pool may be expanded.

CAPTION CONTEST
A new contest for this year, the caption contest! The point of this is to use a base image and put a caption on it, in the sense of a LOLCats or a Demotivational image or such. There is no theme other than humor. You will not be graded on what program or font you use and such. Use Paint if you like, and do not fear that it will count against you, for it will not. The base image for this contest is below.

Posted Image

Rules:
1. You may enter up to three captions, but only your best will win you a prize and you will only win one prize, not all of them.
2. If you enter one caption at first, then make another one, edit your first post.
3. If you want to edit your caption, edit it in your post, do not re-post it.

Prizes:
Backwards the Dunsparce, Moss the Treecko, Skyward the Absol.
The 1st place winner gets first pick, the 2nd place winner receives the second pick and the 3rd place winner receives the third Pokémon. If there are a lot of entries, the prize pool may be expanded.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Generally, when there are twice to three times the amount of entrants as there are prizes for a particular contest, I will expand the prize pool. This does not mean that I make new Pokémon, but rather "duplicates."

A good example of this is the white Sneasels from days past. The Sneasel was so wanted that I added alternate versions of it, two more with different colored feathers, so that more people could win and less people would be left out in the end.

Where are my tacos?!

Candy canes and tarts

CAROLS:

Rudolph, the red-nosed Stantler
was a Christmas Raffle prize.
Everyone seemed to want him,
Pokémon in style he was.

All of the other Stantler
used to go away and laugh.
They never let the shiny
bake the biggest Oddish pie.

Then one January the Ninth
Mizu came to say:
"Rudolph it is time to leave,
happiness is yours just bake."

Then all the Stantler loved him
as they ate his Oddish pie,
Rudolph the red-nosed Stantler,
danced with Doogie all night long!

Original: "Carol of the Bells"

Look! How they run, quickly they come—
Eager they run, capsules are spun.
Pokémon are here, trainers are near
Both young and old, (good heart and good soul)
Win some, lose some, they are never done.
Still battling, (all battling)
One to victory is closer near, shouting words that endear
Fight everywhere, (voice flooding air)
O, how they fight, with such delight
Either here or there, capsules fly through air.

Quickly they flee, trainers they see—
The more they come, quicker they run from
Eager, eager, eager, eager trainers!
Eager, eager, eager, eager trainers!

On, on they send, on without end
‘Mons of their own, ready to pwn
(Look! How they run, quickly they come—
Eager they run, capsules are spun.)
Both young and old, (good heart and good soul)
Win some, lose some, they are never done.
Still battling, (all battling)
One to victory is closer near, shouting words that endear
Fight everywhere, (voice flooding air)
O, how they fight, with such delight

Believe in you, who believes in yourself.

The One Shot prompt has been altered by request, because people wanted it to be fleshed out some more.

"You are exploring the abode of days long past, sent there for some task. A dread chill descends upon the relic remains of the dwelling and mist rises from the floor in lazy coils. A voice whispers through the air: "I must rest... I must rest...""

One-Shot Contest

December 18, 9th Year Post-Awakening Era (P.A.E.)
Eterna Forest, Sinnoh
League-Controlled Territory

In the seven years since the end of the Dark Pokémon Wars, the Eterna Forest had grown far beyond its original borders, a snarled and tangled mass of towering trees that had long since ceased to be individual plant growths, their canopies creating a near-impenetrable roof that cast the forest into a constant gloom. Beneath, the undergrowth had long since woven into a confusing thicket that made passing from one side of the forest to the other a Herculean feat. Since the Wars, no one had successfully navigated the length of the forest; those who had tried either gave up in short order, or were never heard from again.

At the western edge of the forest, just at the edge of the portion deemed explorable by the surviving population of the Sinnoh region, the ruins of an old building that had stood for decades continued to stand, although ravaged by time and the wars. Many portions of the brick wall that once encircled the entire building had crumbled through disrepair or active malevolence, the most prominent of which bearing the wreckage of a dark blue jet fighter, its surface corroded and overgrown by the forest, having lain in that grave for seven years.

A figure in a hooded, deep blue cloak that seemed to shimmer and waver like the ocean tides stood at the beginning of a shallow scar in the ground that led directly to the crashed plane, staring silently at the mangled remains of the once-dreaded aircraft. Near the climax of the Dark Pokémon Wars, this aircraft’s pilot had lured his hated rival into a one-on-one dogfight in the skies over Sinnoh, with the result plain to see.

With a scuff of dried brush against the heel of a boot, the cloaked figure turned away from the crashed plane, focusing its attentions on the abandoned mansion. Old Chateau, it had once been called, before the Dark Wars. Now, just a relic of a lost era. It had always been considered haunted, but in the years since the Wars, those few brave enough to enter had reported sightings of a ghostly man with blue hair wearing a tattered flight suit many recognized as having belonged to the air forces of Team Rocket during the Wars.

An ominous wind bore through the trees, bearing the promise of another winter’s biting cold. The air currents tugged at the ends of the figure’s cloak, pulling it away from booted feet into which pants were tucked that bore the standard camouflage pattern of Sinnoh’s military forces. Droplets of water separated from the cloak and pattered to the ground, though the cloak itself did not bear any indication of being moist enough to carry water.

The forbidding edifice of the Old Chateau loomed above the cloaked figure, a dark and malevolent aura pressing against the individual’s mind in an effort to steer the figure away. But for one who had lived through the horrors of the Dark Pokémon Wars, there was little left in the natural world to be found frightening.

The front folds of the cloak parted, revealing a feminine figure wearing tactical body armor, something almost unheard of amongst the majority of her peers. Since the Awakening, almost all of them had eschewed traditional firearms and combat tactics in favor of their own tremendous personal power. It was the rare few, the most dangerous, that knew to combine their prodigious power with combat strategy and advanced weapons to maximize their battle potential. It was a lesson she had been taught succinctly during her tenure amongst the most feared unit in the Global Pokémon League’s fighting forces, the 14th Fighter Squadron of the Republic of Seafoam Air Force. Or rather, former unit in the League. Seafoam had seceded from the League after the end of the Dark Pokémon Wars to return to their own affairs, and the League had been in no position to do anything about it.

The woman withdrew an Unova-built M4A1 with a hybrid scope from beneath her cloak, pulling back the charging handle and flicking off the safety with her left hand. The hybrid scope was something she’d tinkered into existence years previously, before the Awakening; it used a primary mid- to close-range optic, in this case a red dot sight, with a side-mounted longer-range optic that could be flicked into position to allow for longer-range fire. To compliment the rifle, a bangle wrapped tightly around her left wrist, inset with four faintly-glowing spheres of differing colors. Another compliment of her time in Seafoam, the spheres were materia, a form of commercialized magic discovered by Seafoam two years into the Dark Wars, allowing all of their forces access to supernatural powers, rather than just those affected by the Awakening. For those Awakened who used them, like her, the materia allowed her to cover some of the shortcomings of her awakened power and give a nasty surprise to enemies who thought they had the advantage over her.

Moving forward, the woman held her weapon at an alert carry, stretching out her senses, and years of combat instincts, to warn her of any potential attackers. As she entered the grounds of the Old Chateau, time seemed to slow to a standstill, the breeze dying off as a mist began to creep from the edges of the forest. Despite herself, a chill worked up her spine as she strode up the stairs leading to the broad oak door of the mansion. Pausing before the threshold, she turned to take in the surrounding forest. Many wild Pokémon made Eterna Forest their home, but most stayed well clear of the Old Chateau, with only the occasional ghost roaming the grounds. But that pressure from before wouldn’t go away; there was something present, something aware of her, and it was not pleased with her.

Of course, if the stories about the fallen pilot haunting this mansion were true, that spirit had plenty of reason to despise her.

She braced herself, then rammed her shoulder into the main door. With a resounding hollow thud that echoed across the still forest, the door groaned open slowly, carving a swath through the thick dust that coated the floor, the sound like a tortured soul from Hell. Faintly, all but inaudible over the noise of the door, she thought she heard a voice whisper into her ear, “I…must…rest…”

Spinning, she snapped up her carbine and scanned the porch on which she stood and the yard she had come through, holding her breath and straining her senses to pick up any other form of life in the area. She found nothing, and so turned back to the open door, peering into the darkness of the foyer. This building had been without power for a length of time that only the gods knew of, and she had expected this. Releasing the forward grip of her weapon, she flicked on a tactical light and advanced.

Once inside, she slowly panned her light across the immediate area, the harsh white light, powerful enough to temporarily blind a foe in combat, chasing away the shadows and detailing the decrepit state of the building to her vision. Thick dust coated every visible surface, and cobwebs added another layer of abandonment to a once-grandiose foyer. The air was thick, still, dead.

She closed her eyes and let the muzzle of her rifle shift down slightly, focusing on trying to sense the presence of any Pokémon in the building, or at the very least in the immediate area. Ever since the Awakening, she had found it remarkably simple to sense nearby Pokémon. Others, like Ashura, possessed a similar empathy.

After several moments, she opened her eyes, knowing herself to be the sole occupant of the Old Chateau. Or at least, the sole living occupant.

Reaching up her left hand, the woman tugged back the hood of her cloak, letting it drape across her shoulders, and revealing the face of the woman who had once been called Mars. The years and warfare had not been as unkind to her as it had been to others, leaving her youthful beauty untouched to grow and mature into the woman she was now. Her hair, once dyed red but now its original reddish-brown, hung loosely to her shoulder blades, freed from the confines of the hood. She had not worn it styled since she had been a commander in Team Galactic.

That had been before she had been betrayed by her fellows, sent on a suicide mission and expected to die. Surviving, she had defected to the Republic of Seafoam, returning to her original birth name of Alessa Zelle, where she had remained until near the end of the Dark Pokémon Wars, when a nuclear strike had separated her from her compatriots. She had since worked for the Global Pokémon League, appointed directly by Lord Garick as the overseer of the Sinnoh region following the Dark Pokémon Wars. She had worked over the past seven years to rebuild Sinnoh’s technology, though many of its cities remained in ruins, with a very Seafoam-inspired eye toward strengthening the military for defense before all else. From there, she had observed as the League in the Kanto and Johto regions had slid down the treacherous slope into tyranny, leaving the oppressed people to wallow in the detritus of the war while the Indigo Plateau thrived, until the League had come to resemble the very Rockets they had barely won their survival against.

Shaking those thoughts away, she looked around for a moment, half having expected the ghost of the Old Chateau to make its presence known to her already. Clearing her throat, she called out, “If your soul still haunts the location of your final duel, then make yourself known and appear to me! Saturn!”

“Why have you come to this forsaken place?” an ethereal voice whispered in her ear.

She spun, her rifle coming up to a striking position as she stepped back, but leaned forward to apply momentum to the rifle butt strike she sent into the chest of the shadowy figure that had appeared behind her. Her weapon struck nothing, the figure dissolving into a formless mist that sent her stumbling forward. She quickly recovered, spinning around and tracking the dark laughter of the mist as it drifted across the room and reformed into the hazy, flight suit-clad figure of a man she had once viewed as a comrade, as a lover.

“Why are you, of all people, come to this place, Mars?” the ghost asked.

She let her weapon lower slightly, but she remained on-guard. Ghosts, especially vengeful ones, were notoriously-difficult to deal with. “That woman is dead,” she answered calmly, staring at him without blinking. “Surely you have not forgotten this, Saturn.”

“Mm, then what is it now, hm? What name do you now call yourself now that you serve yet another master?” The ghost smirked maliciously, the dark spots in his face where eyes would be glinting in the low light. “Perhaps that’s the secret to the puzzle, eh? You serve Garick as your master, and answer to the name Marida Cruz now, do you not?”

Stepping sideways across the foyer of the room, she kept herself facing Saturn’s ghost, always intently observing him, alert for any trickery. As she moved, thin pools of water were left in her wake, just enough to form a solid film over the areas she had occupied. “Though I answer to it now, that name, like many of the others I’ve taken over the years, are but titles, to be used and then discarded. When the time is right, I will return to the name by which my truest comrades knew me.”

“And that time to be when you betray your master, as you have betrayed your masters before you. Seafoam, to the League. Galactic, to Seafoam. Quite the chronic backstabbing disorder you possess, Alessa Zelle.”

She narrowed her eyes, continuing to move, leaving the trails of water in her wake. “Has your hate from my not choosing you clouded your knowledge?” she asked. “You know as well as I that it was Jupiter that sold me out to the enemy, it was Cyrus who betrayed me by knowing and doing nothing.”

Saturn’s ghostly form wavered, his features darkening. “And yet you chose not to rebuild Galactic with me. You chose to spread your legs for that backwater redneck obsessed with his explosives instead of returning to me, where you belonged.”

Hot rage surged up inside her, and it was through sheer force of will that she kept it bottled in, stored for when she would unleash it to cause the most carnage. “Do not make light of the choice you forced me to make! I didn’t want to harm you, or him. We offered you to come over to our side, but you joined the Rockets out of spite and killed half of my friends. That selfish arrogance is why I chose him over you.”

That was clearly more than Saturn was prepared to listen to, for at that moment he lunged toward her while emitting an ear-piercing shriek in an attempt to disorient her and leave her open to attack. Fortunately, the hearing protection she used to reduce potential damage from firing her weapon lessened the effect of the shriek, and she was able to fire a burst of shots that passed harmlessly through Saturn’s ethereal form before being forced to dive out of the way of his attack, rolling across the foyer and coming up on a knee where he had been before.

Instead of attacking again, Saturn reformed above one of the pools of water she had left, turning to smirk at her as she gave the appearance of staring in confusion and consternation at the ineffectiveness of her weapon, though she knew full well that unenchanted shots would have no effect on him. “You always were the slow one, Mars. Have you forgotten? Normal type has no effect on ghosts, which means that your weapon will do you no good. What of that mastery of the seas that came to you upon your awakening? Are you not still a Pokémon Master of the Seas? Fitting, for one such as you to lose what power you were given; a child like you having no right to contain such power.”

Standing up, Alessa sighed slowly and shook her head, pressing the palm of her left hand against the side of her carbine. Even if Saturn could not see the extremely-faint blue glow that the weapon now emitted, she didn’t doubt he could sense that she had augmented her weapon to auto-enchant every round it fired to possess the Water type. “It has been nine years since the Awakening, seven since you last walked this world. If there was nothing else I learned at Seafoam, it was to experiment. I won’t say that my powers have doubled since the last time we met, but I’ve invented a lot of new tricks. Even Mistaria might be surprised by some of the things I can do.”

Then, in the blink of an eye, without a verbal indication or a theatrical gesture, water exploded out of her body, propelling her forward in an eye blink, firing her carbine as she moved. The Water-enchanted bullets tore through Saturn’s form once more, but no longer were they harmless, the ghostly man shouting in pain and outrage before bursting into the formless mist again and moving away from her fire. Alessa skidded to a halt in one of the pools of water she had left previously, the water solidifying at her beckoning to provide greater traction to her boots than even the ground would have, before immediately liquefying again. She tracked the mist and continued to fire, stopping only when her magazine ran dry and she was forced to reload.

Saturn took this opportunity to retaliate, launching from the ceiling toward her with his arm replaced with a great claw made of shadows. Instinctively, Alessa raised her arms to defend herself, and the shadowy claw ripped through her left elbow, shearing her lower arm off in an instant. She screamed in pain and dropped to her knees as crimson blood splashed across the ground and the back of a nearby couch. Frantically, she pressed the stump of her arm into her leg in an attempt to stem the flow of blood as she undid her belt and yanked the item free, then set about trying to secure it around her upper arm as a tourniquet.

Hovering across the room, Saturn watched with morbid fascination as the color started to drain out of her skin due to the blood loss, knowing that shock would set in before she could cut off the circulation. And even if she could, she would then be the proverbial one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest; she was left-hand dominant, and would have a hard time fighting with her off-hand while dealing with severe blood loss. “Poor little pariah,” he taunted. “Tossed away by everyone who you ever cared for. Galactic, Seafoam, and even your precious Ganale has made no effort to find you over the past seven years. You should have stayed with me, Mars. This all would have gone differently were you not such a poor judge of character.”

Alessa began to snicker beneath her breath, much to Saturn’s confusion. The snickering soon graduated to chuckles, and then to full-blown laughter. Surely, the shock was causing her to lose what little of her mind remained. But it was no matter. Her pallor was downright cadaverous now, and in a few moments, she would succumb to her injury, and he could finally rest, his revenge complete.

Suddenly, her laughter stopped and she looked across at him, her eyes as clear and lucid as though she were uninjured. Her body shimmered, and then broke into formless water that absorbed into the pool of water that she sat in. Saturn looked about in confusion, unable to sense her location, cursing as he realized that she had been setting this up from the beginning; she’d clearly discovered the means to use water as teleportation. All he had to do was move away from any water and he would be-

That was when he felt the touch of something against his back, spinning around to see Alessa standing behind him with the hood of her watery blue cloak up, pulling back her unharmed left hand. “I invoke the power of the Ghost Mistress, channeled through this sealing charm,” she intoned, calmly and unflinchingly. “I had hoped to peacefully send you to your final rest, but my hand is forced. By the power of the Ghost Mistress, I command you to depart this mortal realm, banished forever to the Astral Plane, the cursed place where the Forbidden hold sway. May the gods have mercy on your soul.”

The sealing charm she had placed on his back pulsed a vibrant white color, and Saturn began to shriek as he felt himself being torn away into the Astral Plane. Alessa watched, stone-faced, as he was destroyed before her, drawn into an invisible portal that would deliver him to a grisly fate. Had he simply been peaceful, that fate would not have been necessary. A pity.

She turned away before it was done, striding out of the Old Chateau and the overgrown Eterna Forest, never looking back once. She only stopped once she had emerged from the forest, into the clear, crisp winter sunshine near the ruins of Eterna City. Reconstruction there, along with the rest of the Sinnoh region, was progressing, albeit slowly; with the lack of large construction machinery lost with most of the rest of technology to the Forbidden, cities had to be rebuilt by hand, and that took a lot of time.

Standing on a hill overlooking the construction efforts in Eterna City, she felt a sense of pride as she watched the people work, assisted both by soldiers of the army and Masters who called Sinnoh their home. From where she stood, she could even see the now-grown form of Sinnoh’s own prodigal daughter, Dawn Berlitz, putting the powers of ice to the reconstruction effort as best she could.

Saturn’s ghost had gotten at least one thing right; she was planning to turn on Garick and the Pokémon League. Years ago, when she had defected to the Global Pokémon League, it had been a noble organization dedicated to protecting the world against Team Rocket’s evils. Of course, Ashura had been the League Master then, before handing the responsibilities over to his former rival, Garick, who clearly had gone mad with the power. Now, the League was the very tyranny that they had tried to stamp out.

It was true that Garick had appointed her as the League Overseer for the Sinnoh region, but clearly he believed her to still be the same woman that had blindly served Cyrus for years in Galactic. As she had told Saturn, that woman was dead. She would not stand idly by while Garick oppressed his own people, and she knew just as well that his appetite for conquest would soon lead him to Sinnoh’s shores. Far better to hit them before they were ready for it.

Rumors abounded that the resistance down in Kanto had gone into open rebellion, and even more intriguing were the reports of possible Seafoam special forces operating with the rebels. Even just a handful of soldiers from Seafoam could drastically pitch things in the rebels’ favor, especially given the arrogance of the League in not immediately recovering its military technology after the Dark Pokémon Wars.

Like Seafoam, Sinnoh did not suffer that weakness. As she looked down over the city, a pair of AH-64D Apache Longbows purchased recently from the still-thriving Unova region emerged from behind a collapsed skyscraper and moved toward the forest on their patrol route. A gentle breeze picked up from the rebuilding city below her and blew past her, tugging her hood off her head and setting her hair to billow gently behind her. Smirking, she turned away from the city and strode purposely forward, her carbine held loosely in her left hand as the two attack helicopters passed over her, the downdraft of their rotors billowing her hair and cloak out behind her.

It was time for the sons and daughters of Sinnoh to take their place in the stand against Garick’s tyranny.

Believe in you, who believes in yourself.

Judging for everything except for the caption contest is in this post. The caption contest will receive an expanded prize pool given the amount of entrants, and until I can sprite the alternates, I won't judge it.

HAIKU:
1st: Dischord
A plate of cookies,
A glass of milk so pure white,
Wait beside the tree.

2nd: Shun
Glass of milk, check
The chocolate treats are here
Where are my tacos?!

3rd: Doogie
Snorlax you so fat
Why do you eat so much food?
Eating all the pie.

2nd: Wait a sec...
